浣熊洞

 

故事第二支線開始，女主角芳婷(Fantine)登場；她是未婚生子的單親媽媽，育有一個女兒，這在當時的社會是很驚世駭俗的

芳婷在前往都市、尋找工作的路上曾在一對夫妻開的旅店投宿；由於對方的熱情提議，也為了避免流言蜚語，她將女兒珂賽特(Cosette)寄養在此，自己繼續前往都市

 

然而芳婷不知道的是，這對夫妻其實是將珂賽特當成搖錢樹，他們在日後不斷編造各種理由，包括歌曲中提到的小孩生病，來向芳婷要錢

芳婷為了這個錢坑，拼命地工作、省吃儉用，絲毫不知她的錢全部被這對夫妻花費在自己和小孩身上，珂賽特則是被百般折磨

 

現在，她有小孩一事被發現了，立刻受到眾人唾棄指責，並因此失去她的工作

此後芳婷的遭遇更是每下愈況，痛苦不已

 

同時，尚萬強化名馬德廉先生(Monsier Madeleine)，在一個小鎮發展事業、建設工廠，並將部份所得捐出幫助當地建設，因此被任命為市長，已經成為一個德高望重的紳士

芳婷工作的工廠，正是尚萬強所經營的

 

當時的社會環境真的很封閉保守，芳婷會成為單親媽媽，事實上是遭男人惡意拋棄

而她也沒有如後半歌詞眾人的指責那樣，出賣自己的肉體轉取外快

只因為她有個私生子，就必須承受眾人異樣的眼光，最後終於墮落

 

At the end of the days這句話算是成語，有「到頭來」，「不管如何」的意思，不過在這首歌裡它大部份是直譯的意思「在這一天的尾聲」

我沒有統一將每句話都翻成一樣，而是配合上下文意適度調整

在這一天的尾聲，嶄新的一天正要破曉

工廠老闆：

在這一天的尾聲，不做事的人什麼也拿不到

只會用屁股呆坐的人不用買什麼麵包

Have you seen how the foreman is fuming today,

with his terrible breath and his wandering hands?

Because Our Fantine won't give him his way

一個女工拿著芳婷的信：

看看這裡有什麼，小清純妹妹?

來嘛，芳婷!跟大家分享消息

"親愛的芳婷，妳必須寄更多錢給我們

妳的孩子需要看醫生，情況緊急"
